  <title>SF Writers Conference</title>

  <description>Heading up to SF this morning for the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.sfwriters.org/&quot;&gt;San Francisco Writers Conference&lt;/a&gt;.  So much fun stuff – Po Bronson is doing the evening keynote tonight, and the program is good this year.  Oh!  And Chris Baty from NaNoWriMo will be there – I won&apos;t be in his talk, but I will be shaking his hand.  Love NaNo.  I&apos;m looking forward to the sessions on how the publishing industry works, and the session on adapting your book for the screen.  I&apos;m bringing my camera, so hopefully I&apos;ll have some good shots to share with you on Monday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, cross your fingers for me – THE MIDNIGHT SON is a finalist for the adult fiction award in the conference contest.   <title>Speed dating with agents</title>

  <description>A popular feature of writing conferences is this &quot;speed dating&quot; concept – with both agents and editors.  The concept is simple: you sit at small table with an agent in a loud and overcrowded room and pitch your story.  Easy, right?  Um.  Not so much.  It&apos;s nerve-wracking and while the agents are always polite you&apos;ve gotta believe that at the end of the 2 hours, they&apos;re exhausted not as attentive as you&apos;d hope.  But, at least when you meet with an agent face-to-face, they can ask for clarifications (and you can see where you need to improve your pitch).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was lucky enough to spend 10 minutes with a guy named Kevin Smokler at my first writing conference.  He&apos;s not an agent, but he knows the industry (especially online promotion).  There was less pressure on me to pitch, but he absolutely tore my pitch apart.  This is where I really learned that a thick skin is a requirement.  It was possibly the most brutal 10 minutes I&apos;ve spent in a long time (at least in my writing life) – he was very kind, but he didn&apos;t get what I was trying to say, because I hadn&apos;t found the heart of my story to pitch.  So, the point is – the first meeting likely going to suck, but you&apos;ll learn so much. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The speed dating concept is good for maximizing the agents&apos; time, and I can appreciate that, but at least at SFWC last year, it was barely controlled chaos: 50 writers standing in line for the agents, chattering, bumping into each other, nervous.  If it&apos;s stressful for the writers, it&apos;s got to be even more so for the agents, glancing over your shoulder while you&apos;re giving your pitch, looking at the 20 people in line behind you, and wondering if they&apos;ll ever get a bathroom break.  I actually prefer how the folks at the East of Eden and Historical Novel Society conferences set it up – you get appointment times with 2 or 3 agents at times throughout the conference.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Word-hoard&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;nubility&lt;/i&gt;: marriageableness&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Myths, symbols, and folklore&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;yoni&lt;/i&gt;  &quot;As the female correspondent to the linga, it symbolizes the maternal womb and the capacity to give birth. This kindly gentleman has taken the time to put together an up-to-date, annotated list of literary journals.  He includes submission guidelines and comments on the journal in question.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://amyx.org/writing/subguide.htm&quot;&gt;A Submission Guide to Little Magazines (Literary)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to the site, the list was originally pulled together for a graduate class, and he&apos;s taken it and expanded it.  The criterion for inclusion is the magazine has published at least one story that was awarded a Pushcart Prize.  &quot;In other words, the magazine demonstrates sound editorial judgment.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Super useful, but again I have to wonder: why all the genre hating?  Certainly it&apos;s the prerogative of these journals to publish what they are interested in and think is good writing – but there&apos;s so much good writing in &quot;genre&quot; and cross-genre books and stories as well.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyone have recs for good/interesting journals in the fantasy/mythic/magical realism realm?   <title>More on historical dialogue</title>

  <description>My friend Tim, a fellow writer, dropped me an email with this fantastic take on writing historical dialogue:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Read your blog on historical dialogue - here&apos;s my two cents: have your characters say what is true - the truth inside them.  Keep it simple.  Keep it genuine.  The dialogue does not have to emphasize the given historical period though it should not be anachronistic.  Have them say only what they need to say to reveal themselves and advance the conflict of the story.  In my opinion, too many historical writers are gilding the lily with period chatter trying to make it seem &quot;real&quot;.  So many of the words put into the character&apos;s mouths should be cut out.  Some periods are more formal.  The syntax might be different.  But the reason why people talk has never changed.  The goal is to give an impression of the time so you don&apos;t notice it. Got the kindest rejection email yesterday, which was a nice antidote to the photocopied stock rejection letters most agents send.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh, and Literate Kitten recommended &lt;i&gt;Persuasion&lt;/i&gt; for my reintroduction to Austen, which I&apos;m excited about.   <title>3 Things</title>

  <description>Thing the first:  did you see the &lt;a href=&quot;http://litpark.com/2007/02/07/neil-gaiman/&quot;&gt;Litpark article about the evolution of Neil Gaiman&apos;s hair&lt;/a&gt;?  Oh yeah.  Good times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thing the second:  )*(#$)(*#)#($)(#*%(*#$ Sharks.  They&apos;re killing me.  Dallas and Anaheim have owned us this week.  Gah.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thing the third:  OK.  Writing dialog in a historical context is hard as hell.  Well, at least for me.  While I&apos;m given to rich, detailed description in my scene setting, my dialog tends to be very real.  I like the juxtaposition.  In my first two novels, the setting is 2000 and 2004 respectively, so the dialog is very modern. In fact, I had to do a fuck-ectomy on my first novel.  My protagonist, Jonas, had a mouth like a sailor (not unlike his creator…) so I had to ratchet that wayyyy back.  Too real?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the novel I&apos;m working on now is set in 1905.  In Norway.  And I&apos;m having the devil of a time.  With my novella set during the late 14c, it seemed easier – I felt much more comfortable attempting an &quot;antique&quot; style.  But that seems terribly out of place for a novel set in the 20th century.  I thought maybe re-reading &lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/DREISER/carrie.html&quot;&gt;Sister Carrie&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/133&quot;&gt;The Damnation of Theron Ware&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/i&gt; to get the rhythm of language at the turn of the century – but then I wonder if, because the authors and their characters are all American, it won&apos;t be a good representation of what I&apos;m looking for. She found that traditional acting wasn&apos;t for her, so she writes and does a lot of cosplay. Fiction is something I took up only about five years ago, so it hasn&apos;t been a lifelong hobby or impulse.  Though, like Catherine, I can&apos;t &lt;i&gt;not&lt;/i&gt; do it – now that I&apos;ve started, I can&apos;t stop.  I feel more like me, more centered, when I&apos;m writing – during the time I&apos;m actually sitting there, and in general when I&apos;m working on something.  So, that&apos;s the amorphous answer:  because I have to. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But when I get into the nitty gritty, I realized a few things.  I love a challenge and I love to be challenged.   Writing, especially novels, is a huge challenge – it&apos;s like a jigsaw puzzle, and you don&apos;t have all of the pieces when you start, and you only have a vague idea how it&apos;s supposed to turn out.  Plus, I love people and I am fascinated by psychology – I&apos;ve flirted with the idea of becoming a therapist about once a year.  So delving into motivations and imagining characters&apos; interactions is fascinating.   And while characters are real, they&apos;re also not going to cut you off on the freeway and fuck with your Zen.  So I like to hang out with them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, of course, I love that high, that feeling of going with the flow, when whole paragraphs come out and you look back and go, &quot;Whoa.  Where did that come from?&quot;  You know you&apos;re flowing with your higher self and your connection to the universe.  It&apos;s addictive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So for you writers out there: why do you continue to write?  What drives you?  What feeds your soul about it, and what challenges your brain?   <description>So, yeah.  Found out yesterday that a good friend has breast cancer; she finds out next week the extent/severity/etc.  Makes all the angst over rejections and getting an agent seem pretty ridiculous.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending on who you talk to (or maybe where you are, time zone-wise) yesterday or today was Imbolc and Brigid&apos;s day.  Brigid, both the &quot;pagan&quot; goddess and the Christian St. Brigit, are celebrated variously on Feb 1 and Feb 2.  Today is also Candlemas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I particularly like Brigid because she represents inspiration.   As a keeper of the flame of inspiration, she looks after both poets/writers and smithies, which I think is a very cool idea – the flame of inspiration to get you started on your creative endeavor, and the strength to persevere in your task.   <description>Researching to write, writing to research?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I like collecting nuggets of information, like a particularly greedy squirrel.  History, pop culture, literature, sociology, archaeology, art history, music, whatever. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, when I started writing fiction about five years ago, it was naturally a great excuse to do research and learn new things.  What usually happens is this:  I&apos;ll write the first chapter or so of a story, and then I&apos;ll realize I don&apos;t know what the hell I’m talking about.  So, hooray, I get to go research!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&apos;ve got a couple of decent university libraries nearby (I&apos;m too lazy to go up to Stanford and they&apos;re too snooty to let me into their stacks, anyway) so off I go.  It&apos;s a big production, and I generally spend all day farting around in the stacks.  Sadly, the MLK library (San Jose/SJSU joint production) is too new to be musty, but on a Saturday morning there&apos;s no one around, so I get the upper floors practically to myself, as well as the huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on downtown SJ.  It&apos;s just a great excuse to pretend I&apos;m in college again, take copious notes, learn new things, and read, read, read.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the next few weeks I&apos;ll bookmark about a bajillion sites related to my topic and start plowing through those.  Thank heavens for del.icio.us – I can finally organize my bookmarks and find them.  I try to get the bulk of my research done ahead of time, but new stuff always crops up that I need to learn about, and the challenge there is not getting sidetracked.  I&apos;ve talked with Cas and Heather about this before – it&apos;s far too easy to &quot;just check a fact&quot; while I&apos;m in the middle of writing, and find 15 minutes of precious writing time have evaporated.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So.  What about you?  Are you addicted to research?   <description>If you&apos;re a visual artist, do you also write?  If you&apos;re an incredible cook, do you also draw?  If you write, do you also sew/knit?  Is historical research a form of creativity?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&apos;m so fascinated by the ways people are creative.  I write, but I&apos;m also a pretty mean baker (though hopeless as a cook).  I can&apos;t draw (but love to doodle) but I love getting out my wee oil paint set and playing with color.  It would be interesting to see if there&apos;s a trend: writers are more likely also sew and draw, for example.  Or painters are more likely to be amazing cooks, that sort of thing.   <description>Flicking through &lt;i&gt;The Herder Dictionary of Symbols&lt;/i&gt;, I came across the entry for lightning (below) and was fascinated by the first line:  &quot;a symbol or expression...of divine power, which appears as terrifying or creative.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We&apos;ve all heard the stories - or experienced ourselves - the spark of inspiration, a kind of lightning bolt, and that feeling of being in the moment, going with the flow, etc.  That&apos;s the positive side of that lightning.  But what about the terrifying side?  Have you had ideas, inspirations, which have terrified you?  Or at the least, been deeply disconcerting?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have two examples.  Sometime last week, I realized with a jolt (ha!) that not one, but two, characters were going to die in my current story, and I took it very personally for some reason.  It scared me - why would I do that?  Why would I think of doing that to a character, am I a sadist?  The lightning bolt of inspiration was frightening in that moment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I was writing my first novel, I wrote the first chapter without a real idea of where I was going.  Then, about a month later, the ideas for the plot came fast and furious - that flash of inspiration - and I stopped and thought: this is kinda weird, would anyone get this?  And then I thought: oh crap, am I going to write a novel?  It was a different kind of terrifying.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what about you? How cool is that?  But I haven&apos;t watched a single episode.  If it were on at 8 and not 9, I might actually watch, but I&apos;m an old lady now who&apos;s usually asleep by 8:45 at night. I don&apos;t watch enough TV to warrant getting Tivo, so I&apos;ll just wait until the DVD is released and I can get it from NetFlix. The goal of the program is to investigate the relationship between place and the creativity and unique works that emerge as people are affected by, and affect, that location.   Absolutely fascinating.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My novels (thus far) are about far-away (for me) places – France, Norway, medieval England – but the short stories I&apos;ve written have been set locally.  That&apos;s odd, I just realized that.  I&apos;m proud of California, and feel like I&apos;m on a mini-mission to show people that there is so much more to the San Jose than the Silicon Valley.  But when I get into a longer work, I feel like I want to really imagine, get under the skin, of another time and/or place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So my question for you all: how does the location you live affect your work?  Do you write about your hometown, or your current home?  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh, and on the subject of San Jose history, here&apos;s an incredibly cool grassroots history project: &lt;a href=&quot;http://sanjose.murmur.info/&quot;&gt;http://sanjose.murmur.info/&lt;/a&gt; (also in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal).  The [murmur] team works with local folks to record tidbits on local history and take a photo of the location being discussed.  They then post the audio file and the photo on their website.  But what&apos;s even cooler is that they also put signs up at the locations being discussed (a green ear) and you can call the number on the sign and get that bit of local history. It&apos;s got quite a haunting sound, and they&apos;re absolutely gorgeous to look at.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardanger_fiddle&quot;&gt;Wikipedia entry&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt; A Hardanger fiddle or hardingfele (Norwegian) is a traditional stringed instrument from Norway. In modern designs, the instruments are very similar to the violin, but typically with thinner wood. It is different enough that a luthier accustomed to repairing violins could easily ruin a hardingfele.   <description>Apologies for those of you here who&apos;ve already read this in my other LJ, but...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thing the first:  Huzzah!  THE MIDNIGHT SON is a finalist in the San Francisco Writer&apos;s Conference contest!  &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.sfwriters.org/pages.cfm?ID=116&quot;&gt;The gory details are here.&lt;/a&gt;   Winners will be announced at the conference – as if I weren&apos;t already giddy about going to this event!  It&apos;s nice to have your work recognized – THE PILGRIM GLASS was a finalist in the 2005 Faulkner-Wisdom, and now my strange little Erik is a finalist in this SFWC contest.  I&apos;m thrilled!  Now, we just need find an agent…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thing the second: if you are at all interested in folklore, myth, folklife, etc., &lt;a href=&quot;http://endicottstudio.typepad.com/&quot;&gt;the links at the Endicott Studio blog&lt;/a&gt; are not to be missed.  I&apos;ve mentioned before that it&apos;s a fantastic blog in and of itself, content-wise, but the collection of links is pretty spectacular.  Check it out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thing the third:  Inspiration.  For your latest creation – story, painting, sweater, cake, whatever – what inspired you?  What was the spark of light that led you down the road you&apos;re on?  For me, it can come in the strangest ways at the strangest times.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With the novel I&apos;m writing now, it came when I was incredibly frustrated with my first 2006 &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.nanowrimo.org&quot;&gt;NaNo&lt;/a&gt; attempt.  I was floundering and dissatisfied with the story and the characters.  One evening, about 4 or 5 days in, I was doing a visualization for some spiritual &quot;homework&quot; I had, and the image of a beautiful, spare cabin on the top of a mountain, surrounded by even higher mountains, popped into my head.  I wandered around the space for a while – it was very soothing, calming.  My brain tends to be a rather hectic place at times, and the cabin was the perfect antidote.  Then, all of a sudden, two young women sauntered in:  one, strong and open-faced, with straw-blond hair and icy blue eyes; the other, delicate and mischievous, with chestnut hair and pale green eyes.  And when they started talking, I was shocked to realize that their names were Elisabeth and Oleanna: my great-great aunts from Norway.  I&apos;d never met either one of them, but there they were. So I wrote down what they were chattering about, and the story began to unfold from there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will admit I was reluctant at first.  My second novel is set in modern-day Norway, and though Elisabeth and Oleanna&apos;s story is set in 1905, I was concerned about setting another story in western Norway.  But, you have to go with the flow as far as it will take you.
